FIRSTLY I wish to applaud the efforts of SALT in trying to save our lido, and also all the people concerned - especially the public - who made an impressive turnout at the meeting held in the Heritage Centre to force another Parish Poll in order that our voices may be heard to show Wychavon District Council we disagree with their appalling decision to bulldoze one of the last landmarks in our town.
However, one cannot help but have a feeling of dj vu, considering the outcome of the last poll when the Conservative run WDC openly admitted it would not abide by the public's decision, whatever the outcome (so much for democracy).
Hence there was a considerably low turnout, but an overwhelming support for a supermarket and petrol station on the Kidderminster Road, instead of the ever increasing eyesore that is Waitrose.
With this in mind is it safe to assume that WDC expects the same result with its decision to hold the Parish Poll, not on Election Day when there would be a considerably higher turnout, and to possibly save time and money and the public could, to coin a phrase, 'Kill two birds with one stone', but to hold it a week before.
The General Election had been on the cards for some weeks so obviously preparations were well in hand, however the Parish Poll was not, and therefore the WDC decision appears to be blatantly politically motivated!
I do hope that the good people of Droitwich will turn out in force on both occasions to let WDC know how they feel!
Alas I feel it will be in vain as regards the General Election where our much more prosperous neighbours, Pershore and Evesham, whom WDC appears to favour, will sway the vote!
