CHANGES to a main route into Rubery could get the go ahead.

Plans to stop noise, light and speed problems, caused by the busy road, are now being looked at by the Highways Partnership.

The stretch of the A38, near to Callowbrook Road, has caused problems for residents because of the noise of cars and the glare of their headlights. Residents also fear vehicles could come off the road towards their homes because of their speed.

However, plans could soon see that part of the road, which is currently a dual carriageway, reduced to one lane with traffic slowed from 70 to 50mph.

Mike Walton, from the Highways Partnership Unit, said: "We have looked into the problem and are now awaiting test results on the road surface to see if it needs resurfacing. If that is the case, we can do the work by using the highways maintenance budget and at the same time reducing the road size and speed. Hopefully this would solve the problem."

Another option is to install both crash and sound barriers on the existing stretch of the road.

However, such a project would have to be put into the local transport program and come up against other similar projects for consideration.

"The work is still very much up in the air, but might go ahead in the future. It is being looked at," said Mike.

Councillor Peter McDonald (Lab-Waseley) said: "It has been a problem for the residents and any changes would hopefully slow traffic into Rubery as well."
