REDDITCH people can give their support to a campaign aimed at abolishing crippling Third World debt during an event on Saturday.

Make Poverty History campaigners will be gathering outside St Stephen's Church from 10.30am and encircling it with a white band at 11am - the symbol of the campaign.

People who take part will also get the chance to sign a "Vote for Trade Justice" card and a presentation on the Make Poverty History campaign will take place in the Ecumenical Centre, where Fairtrade tea and coffee will also be available.

A spokesman for the Redditch campaigners said: "It is the 11th hour but there is still time to make poverty history.

"The Make Poverty History campaign is an alliance of charities, celebrities, faith organisations and unions working for a fairer deal for developing countries.

"It has three aims - to drop the debt, more and better aid and trade justice."

At 11am, the bells of St Stephen's will toll to mark the 11th hour. Redditch MP Jacqui Smith will be attending the event along with mayor Jack Cookson.

Also taking part will be the Redditch Trade Justice Network, which recently changed its name after adopting a formal constitution.

It is hoped this will enable Redditch Council to establish formal links with the group in connection with its Fairtrade Town campaign.
