SUIPERMARKET chain Netto is to open a new store in Kidderminster which will create 25 jobs.

The Danish group has bought the freehold to a building at the junction of Stourport Road and New Road.

It is occupied by Wilsons Pet Centres and Somerfield, which, along with town rival Waitrose, announced it was closing last month.

While Wilsons Pet Centre will remain where it is, Netto has announced plans to refurbish the Somerfield site ready for a summer opening.

Claus Wdeled, managing director at Netto UK, said he hoped the group's emphasis on low prices would get price-conscious Kidderminster shoppers flocking through the checkouts.

"Value retailing has really come of age in the UK with more and more people seeking out the best quality at the lowest prices and that is what our new store will bring to Kidderminster," he said.

"Our Smart Shopping philosophy helps customers make best use of their time and their money by concentrating on delivering the lowest possible price on the best quality goods.

"On average, a shopping basket of Netto's own-brand and branded goods is 20 per cent cheaper than its rivals. What we offer is no frills and lower bills."

Netto stores offer a range of 1,100 food and non-food products and regularly stocks up to 120 one-off items.

It already has 16 stores in the Midlands and is looking to open more during the next 12 months.

Netto is a subsidiary of Dansk Supermarket Group.

It opened its first UK store in December 1990 and has since become one of Britain's fastest-growing retail chains with more than 136 stores across the country.

Somerfield and Waitrose announced last month they were closing their stores, which employ 113 people.
