Kidderminster Chess Club Knights' captain John Wrench finally beat Worcester St John's Steve James, at his 12th attempt.
For many years, James had been Wrench's "bogey" opponent, once defeating him four times in one season.
There was further delight for Wrench as he saw his side run out 3-1 winners in the Worcester and District League First Division match, scoring two points against one of their rivals for the title.
Full results (Kidderminster names first): Wrench 1, James 0; Maurice Bissell 1, G Dyett 0; Frank Pickett 0.5, N Harris 0.5; John Gittus 0.5, S Foster 0.5.
