AT the March meeting G Hargreaves talked about rhododendrons, from their history and origins in the upper regions of India, Nepal and China to the large collection at Kew Gardens. He accompanied his talk with slides.
As part of the society's centenary celebrations, 34 members, led by chairman Michael Ecob, went on a trip to Cornwall, during which they visited Falmouth and Endsleigh Garden Centre, Ivybridge, ravine gardens at Trebah and Glendurgan, which featured cornelias and magnolias, and Pine Lodge, St Austell, where more than 6,000 plants were displayed in seven acres of natural woodland, and included 80 species of magnolias.
A visit to the Eden Project followed and, on the final day of the visit, the Lost Gardens of Heligan were enjoyed. On the way home the tour stopped at Sander's Garden World, Brent Knoll.
At Wednesday's meeting in Astley village hall, which starts at 7.30pm, J Snocken will talk about violas and pansies.
