A very successful jumble sale was held in the Music Hall, Pershore, on Saturday on behalf of the funds of Pershore Cricket Club. Through the liberality of many ladies and gentlemen in the town and neighbourhood a good collection of various articles was obtained for the sale, and during the afternoon the committee, aided by a number of ladies, had a busy time arranging and pricing the goods. At six o'clock the doors were opened, and in less than an hour everything, with the exception of a few articles was disposed of, the sellers having all they could do to cope with the rush of business which ensued. We are glad to say that nearly £8 was taken, which after expenses have been deducted will quite clear the club from debt and leave a small balance in hand.

At the annual general meeting of the Evesham and District Popular Science Circle on Wednesday, Mr. Robert Aspland presided. The financial statement, presented by Mr. Aspland showed a debit balance but this is more than balanced by the outstanding subscriptions and the sale of stationery etc., in stock. Mr. W. A. Aspland was elected president for the next session, Mr. C. A. Binyon, the former president, being unable to find the time to stand again. It was decided to continue upon the satisfactory lines of last year's programme, including the well-attended summer rambles and visits to commercial establishments.

Cash) that a council flat should be allocated on the new Fairfield Estate, Evesham, to a woman church worker attached to the new church hall on the estate. Councillor R. G. Speed said that the decision of the Housing Committee that the council should not deviate from its "points" system of house allocation, in view of the number of applicants, was a "grievous and uncharitable" one and should be reversed. The Housing Committee, which consists of all members of the council, recommended that the application should be considered at a later date in the appropriate category,

A Pershore councillor has said that if clubs and societies who ask Wychavon for grants "tightened their belts" for a year, the council could solve the problem of sub-standard housing in the district. Mr C. A. B. Hudson told members of the council's finance committee during a discussion on cut-backs in capital expenditure: "It's the same with swimming pools and public halls throughout the district - I would estimate that swimming in the region will cost the ratepayer all of a 2p rate per year in the not too distant future. And if we go ahead with the multi-purpose hall in Pershore, similar facilities will be required in the other two towns at a considerable cost to the council."
