ONE of Malvern's most prominent landmarks needs urgent repairs.

The congregation of Christ Church, on Avenue Road, must raise up to £90,000 for work to the spire and roof.

The top of the spire needs to be taken down and rebuilt because iron cramps, which form part of the structure, are rusting and damaging the stonework.

The building dates from the 1870s and the congregation wants to get it listed, in the hope of getting help to pay for the work.

Churchwarden Chris Pierce said: "The big two advantages are that we would make ourselves eligible to apply for a sizeable grant and that we could claim back the VAT on repair work, which in itself would run to many thousands of pounds."

"Ideally, the work should be done this year. However, if it is delayed until 2006, a further survey will be necessary and it's possible that temporary strapping might be required over next winter, thus adding further to the costs."

Other work on the roof and stonework also needs to be carried out urgently and a total bill of up to £90,000 has been mooted.

Parish treasurer Brian Jenkins has opened a Spire Appeal and parishioners are being urged to think of ways to raise money for the cause.

An English Heritage representative met church members on Wednesday (April 13), to discuss the possibilities.

Mr Pierce said the meeting was useful and answered some questions raised by members of the congregation.

The issue will be discussed at the parish's annual general meeting at the church on Monday, April 25, at 7.30pm.
