THE top two positions in the Brewin Dolphin Securities-sponsored Malvern Table Tennis League third division were not settled until the final match of the season was played.
Crackpots B needed four points from their second meeting with Abbeydowne to take the second spot. As it was, they only managed a 6-4 win to give them three points and they ended up equal on points with Manor Park Crackpots, but behind them on sets difference of 92 to 101.
Stephen Linder was the best player of the evening with three singles wins and paired up with Ted Cates for the successful doubles. Ted and Alan Forsdike each won one single. Bill Lucas and Peter Dennis won two for Abbeydowne.
Manor Park Crackpots took all the sets against Dukes Way Dynamos but each of the Dynamos' players won games and Colette Jarnes and Vivian Tolley both took sets to five games. Richard Cullis, Stan Ginn and Edward Palmer were the winning trio, taking second place at the end of the season for the first time.
X-Police were whitewashed by division three winners, Uckinghall, but four sets went to five games and another two to four.
Thirteen games were won by just two points and Ralph Cook was particularly unlucky not to win a set as he won his first game with Peter Quy by 15-13 and the fourth by 11-2. He was two games to one up against Roger Davies before losing the final game to seven. Peter Nash was the other Uckinghall player taking all his sets.
Results: Dukes Way Dynamos 0, Manor Park Crackpots 10; X-Police 0, Ucking-hall 10; Abbeydowne 4, Crackpots B 6.
