PLANS to build a supermarket in Malvern Link will create traffic chaos, people who live nearby have claimed.
The scheme to put a branch of Lidl on the site of the former Eurohaus garage in Worcester Road, Malvern Link, is due to be looked at by councillors next Wednesday after months of delays.
The scheme involves the demolition of the garage and redevelopment of a 1,400 square metre store and 74 parking spaces. It also includes four houses.
But the council has received 31 letters raising concerns about on-road parking being lost and extra traffic.
They also say the town has too many supermarkets and it would have a harmful impact on the conservation area's character.
"We're still concerned about the traffic issue - it'll be chaos on the roads if it goes ahead," said Angela Burgess, of Worcester Road.
"There's no other supermarket where they're allowed to tip traffic out on to a
main road."
And Alison Pickford, of Merrick Road, also raised concerns.
"They're going to build 390 homes on the North Side which will filter through to Worcester Road and this will just add to this.
"My gripe is with the council, though - they never really put much effort into the infrastructure before developing parts of Malvern."
However the scheme has also attracted 13 letters of support, saying it would be a welcome addition making the site "far less of an eyesore".
Council development control manager David Murray said Lidl had addressed the issues since the initial application and it would help enhance the area.
Planning officers are recommending the scheme is approved subject to several conditions, including the provision of replacement parking.
