TRADING Standards officers in Worcestershire say unscrupulous car dealers are trying to capitalise on the collapse of MG Rover.

They say dealers are "fobbing off car buyers" by claiming they have no consumer rights after the downfall of the Longbridge-based company.

But Ally Cornelius, the advice and education manager at Worcestershire County Council, said dealers were not able to avoid their responsibilities.

"Irrespective of what happens to Rover, motorists will always have their statutory rights against the dealer from whom they bought their car," she said.

"These rights, under the Sale of Goods Act, requires dealers to supply vehicles that are of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.

"If faults arise within a reasonable length of time after purchase, the customer may be entitled to return the vehicle to the dealer, or get a replacement or partial refund.".
