ST GEORGE and his traditional adversary, the dragon, will be making a number of appearances outside Worcester's Guildhall this weekend.

On Saturday, April 23, a play will be performed in the city as part of celebrations for England's patron saint's day.

The event, which will be performed by students from Worcester College of Technology at 11am, noon, 2pm and 3pm, will be in support of the Acorns Children's Hospice Trust.

Also as part of the fund-raising event, Acorns volunteers, complete with St George's Day hats and painted faces, will sell red roses for a minimum donation of £1 each.

English teas and homemade cakes will be on sale inside the Guildhall, which will be decorated in red, white and blue. The day will run from 10am-4pm.

"We hope lots of people will come and celebrate St George's Day with us and help raise much-needed funds," said organiser Rosemary Henman.

"This is such a vital facility for local families who are struggling to cope with a life-limited child and is a very worthwhile cause."

Acorns, which cares for life-limited children, welcomed the first patients to its new 10-bed hospice in Bath Road last month.

Man held

AT 5.26pm on Friday, April 15, a man was arrested in Deacle Place, Evesham, on suspicion of assault.

He was bailed to return to Worcester Police Station while enquiries continue.
