A PROPOSAL to turn the Droitwich Lido site into a water feature has received a frosty reception from the Save A Lido Today (SALT) group.

First draft plans to create a fish-shaped one-metre deep 'fun pool' where the lido is now were unveiled to district councillors last week.

The outline scheme, which was drawn up by Wychavon District Council officers, also includes an inland beach with huts and a walk along the edge of Herriott's Pool.

It has been mooted that a health spa could be built at a later date, while it looks like the 1930s art deco building would be retained.

No costs have been identified for the scheme as yet but it is believed section 106 money - which is money given to the town by developers - will be used and estimates for the cost have been put at between £500,000 and £2 million.

SALT is not convinced the proposal is a good idea.

It feels the up coming parish poll and county elections may be the reason this plan has been unveiled so quickly.

Spokesman for SALT, Ian Wild, said: "Whilst it is understood that Wychavon District Council has committed itself to seeking a solution to the lido issue, I would be very concerned if the focus of its attention was either the parish poll, being held on April 28, or the local and county elections on May 5."

He added: "We all need to work together to ensure that we do not fail in our duty of care for such an important complex.

"We need to ensure that Wychavon District Council can succeed in its primary duty - to strive to improve the quality of life of and to give civic pride back to - the people of Droitwich."
