RANGERS entertained Brereton on Saturday, a side who had beaten them 3-0 a month ago in a West Midlands division two fixture.
MALVERN RANGERS 4, BRERETON TOWN 4
With a 4-2 advantage going into the last quarter of an hour, Rangers conceded two goals and it was the home side who were more relieved to hear the final whistle.
Rangers opened the scoring after two minutes, good play by Simon Rea, Danny White and Rob Cullen freed Sam Black, who made a strong run into the box. He pulled the ball back to Cullen, who rifled it into the roof of the net.
Minutes later Sam Black was sent clear in on goal, only to be brought down by the last defender. The player was cautioned when most people expected the red card. The resulting free-kick was wasted. Nine minutes later, Brereton were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. Keeper Marc Wright failed to get his post covered and Luke Elwood took a quick kick into the corner for the equaliser.
After 24 minutes, Cullen hit a tremendous shot against the post but Rangers took the lead five minutes later when Black was sent racing clear and he coolly rounded keeper Paul Motum.
One minute later and it was all square again when Rangers had numerous chances to clear the ball but failed to do so. Ollie Newey was on hand to score at the back post.
Four minutes before the interval, Rangers again took the lead. Neil Bond played a long ball into the path of Black, he strongly shrugged off the last defender to restore Rangers' advantage.
Rangers gained a two-goal cushion when initially Rob Cullen was fouled in the box, the ball broke loose however to Bond, who fired into the corner.
From this point it was the visitors, prompted strongly by the influential Luke Elwood, who took the game to Rangers.
On 31 minutes, the ball was only partially cleared to the edge of the box and Elwood scored in off the post. With just five minutes remaining, Elwood struck the cross-bar with a good shot and the ball broke free to substitute Dave Shepherd to score the equalising goal.
Man-of-the-match was Neil Bond.
