THE only politics in the Sling Lane issue is Coun Tom Wells seeking votes. I feel Coun Wells has backed the wrong body of support here.
Yes, I am a coach with Newtown Sports and have more than a passing interest. The club is growing at a phenomenal rate. Nearly 300 boys a week in and week out during the football season being coached and playing matches. Lower Howsell is not big enough to accommodate the boys on a Saturday and Sunday anymore and the club accepted the council's initial offer of a lease at Sling Lane.
Now the residents shout that the playing field will no longer be a playing field but a sports field, the number of cars and the noise. Most happy playing fields I know are always noisy places. I accept the car issue and I know that as a club, Newtown Sports were looking at ways of addressing the issue.
As I see it, there has been no debate with Newtown Sports and the residents but just whispers. The last I heard was that we intended to have a 20,000 all-seater stadium with an underground car park and having our own railway station built alongside as well! We are ambitious but all we were seeking was to put changing facilities on site, create a bigger hard standing area to house the additional cars and have stability for the football club.
If it is to be politics and sport, let's have a debate. Newtown Sports are not politicians but volunteers who put something back into the community for the youth of the town and local area.
