A MALVERN mother and daughter did the double in Cornwall last weekend when they both won their classes at the British Orienteering Championships.

Lynden and Rosemary Hartmann of Eaton Road, Malvern Wells, competed in the highly technical sand dune areas between Newquay and Perranporth but found the terrain to their liking.

In perfect conditions on Saturday, 12-year-old Rosemary, a year seven pupil at The Chase, pulled out a stunning run on the girls U14 B course, while her mother took advantage of moving up an age class to win the women's 50-55 short course by three and a half minutes.

In the relay championships on Sunday, a makeshift team managed a surprise podium finish in the highly competitive men's U18 competition.

First runner was Robert Farrington, 16, a pupil at John Masefield HS, who put the team into third place. Former Malvern Girls' College pupil Tessa Hill, had an inspired run to maintain their position. Tessa is British Junior Elite Champion. Daniel Hartmann, 15, of The Chase had a storming anchor leg to bring the team up to second place.

Anyone who would like to try this exciting sport, suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, has the perfect opportunity tomorrow (Saturday) when an informal event is being held at the Old Hills, Callow End. From 10am to noon, the cost is £1. More details on 01684 577062.
