MAY I thank D E Margrett and George Cowley for their response to my letter on cycling.

However, I feel they have missed my point.

It may surprise you but I do think cycling on pavements is dangerous. The thrust of my letter was to point out the (arguable) double standards of the law surrounding this contentious issue.

My main point was that if cycling on pavements is wrong per se, why are most cycling routes on pavements? Do you see what I mean?

Surely, a shared route cannot become safe just because the one activity is now allowed. This must give out a mixed message, and I might add, through that message, a licence to the less responsible to ignore the law whatever it states.

I welcome Mr Margrett's comment on walking and totally agree with him. He should understand, though, that I do huge amounts of walking already, sometimes as much as 20 miles in a day.

I have always been an avid walker and have been cycling almost 50 years, doing about 4,000 miles a year. So I make no apology for suggesting that I do have a valid opinion based on experience, although I accept not everyone will agree with it.
