TOWN Reserves got off to a great start defeating Wednesbury Town 0-3 on a mud patch of a pitch in this League Cup semi-final first leg game.
WEDNESBURY TOWN 0, MALVERN TOWN RES 3
It was one-way traffic for Malvern in the first-half and with just six minutes gone Danny James laid the ball off to Ed Lyons, who forced a great save out of the Wednesbury keeper.
Four minutes later James took a corner, picking out Mark Goodman who headed on to Joe Leighton. He timed his run to perfection, heading home the first goal. Goodman set up the next goal with a well -aken free-kick, which the keeper called for and missed completely, leaving Leighton to nip in at the far post and head home his second goal.
Wednesbury almost pulled a goal back as Tony Jones headed past Adrian Whittal-Williams. But Leighton dived in and hooked the ball off the line, preventing a certain goal. The third and final goal came when James and Goodman combined to cross the ball for Dan Finnigan. The midfielder withstood two robust challenges before hammering the ball home.
Malvern's fluent passing fell away a little in the second half as players went in search of personal glory and Wednesbury worked their way into the game. Town's defence and midfield, where Oakes and Brighton stood out, negated the best Wednesbury had to offer and Town can look forward to the second leg with a degree of confidence.
HINTON 2,
MALVERN TOWN RESERVES 0
TOWN Reserves made the trip to Hereford for this mid-week fixture and met an in-form Hinton side.
Malvern, who were much changed from the weekend line-up, worked exceptionally hard, but were second best for much of the match. Jason Prosser and Ross Semple were on target for Hinton.
MALVERN TOWN RESERVES 2, DARLASTON TOWN 1
TOWN Reserves entertained a young and fit Darlaston Town side at the Langland Stadium on Monday evening and managed to scrape a win and with it three valuable points.
Mark Goodman opened the scoring for Malvern but Dale Watkins grabbed a deserved equaliser.
Adam Simpson headed home a Goodman corner for the winner.
