A GROUP dedicated to the history and heritage of Worcester hopes to turn the Faithful City's Friar Street into a living recreation of VE Day.

The Worcester Heritage and Amenity Trust (WHAT) has received £2,300 from the National Lottery to celebrate the events leading up to the end of the Second World War with workshops and re-enactment activities.

The VE Day activities will be divided between Tudor House and Greyfriars, the National Trust property, which are both in Friar Street.

"We will have volunteers in 1940s dress, we're hoping for a band playing 1940s tunes and we have original Second World War radio recordings," said Jenny Morecroft, of WHAT.

"We want anybody who remembers life in the city during the Second World War to get in touch and record their memories for the archives.

"We are obviously delighted to get this grant, and the money will enable us to offer a lot more than we would otherwise have been able to do,"

WHAT was set up to safeguard the future of Tudor House in Friar Street, Worcester, previously known as the Museum of Local Life before it closed in 2003.

There will also be displays at Tudor House and organisers are hoping to repeat the success of the Victorian Christmas Fayre, which saw around 2,500 visitors through their doors.

Rachel Bannon, the custodian of Greyfriars, said most of the cash would be spent on re-enactors. "We're really lucky to get this money," she said."All ages are welcome. It's not just military history but also about what happened on the Home Front."

The event takes place on Saturday, May 28, between 10am and 5pm, and entrance to both buildings will be free.

The £12.3m Lottery Home Front Recall scheme is aimed at supporting activities commemorating the part played by those on the home front during the war six decades ago.
