THE First World War medals of a Worcestershire soldier killed by "friendly fire" near the First World War battlegrounds of Ypres are to be auctioned with some of his personal belongings.
Cpl Arthur Long, who came from Lydiate Ash, was a motor bike messenger with the Royal Engineers, who was shot by a sentry while carrying a message on October 18, 1914.
The 24-year-old soldier was buried on the spot, about five miles east of Ypres, according to a letter from the colonel in charge of the Royal Engineers records office.
This will be included in the sale of his three medals, along with his birth certificate, death notice and photograph.
Also included is a map of the Passchendaele cemetery and a photograph of his grave, along with his pipe, dog tags and cockerel's head match case.
The collection is set to raise between £350 and £450 when it is put up for auction by Andrew Grant Fine Art at the Bankhouse Hotel, Bransford, tomorrow.
