THREE balaclava-clad men struck at a Worcester jeweller's today.
But they were forced to flee empty-handed after they failed to force their way in.
The bungled raid happend at Ernest Jones, in High Street, at around 5am, when it is believed the trio attempted to smash down the front door of the shop.
A dark blue BMW cabriolet was seen leaving the scene at speed, without its lights on, via Foregate Street and The Tything towards the A38 Droitwich Road.
It is believed the car continued on to the M5, still at speed and without lights, and on to the M42.
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen any suspicious activity in Worcester High Street or adjacent streets at around the time of the incident, or may have seen the get-away car or know of its whereabouts.
"We've been grateful for the assistance already received from witnesses, but we'd like to hear promptly from other members of the community who may be able to offer additional information about the attempted break-in or the car used in this incident," said a police spokesman.
The store declined to comment on the incident.
Anyone with information is asked to call Worcester police on 08457 444888, quoting incident number 25S/270405, or contact CrimeStoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
