REDDITCH Police are warning motorists to be vigilant after a series of vehicle thefts in the Woodrow, Greenlands and Lodge Park areas in recent weeks.

These include two attempted thefts last Tuesday, April 19. The first was at 10.30pm in Wishaw Close, Greenlands, when two youths were disturbed as they tried to steal a blue Ford Fiesta.

This was followed by another incident at 11pm when two youths broke into a white Ford Fiesta in Larkfield Drive, damaging the car's steering column before being disturbed.

Sgt Gerry McKenna, from Redditch south sector, said: "On Tuesday night the offenders were not successful but we want people to be aware that these incidents have happened and to be vigilant.

"Older car models do seem to have been targeted, particularly the old-style Ford Fiestas, so we urge owners with older cars to be alert."

Redditch crime risk manager Pc Eddie Mills said: "Anyone with concerns about the security of their car or van can log on to the Home Office vehicle crime website at www.secureyourmotor.gov.uk or can collect a copy of the Steer Clear leaflet from Redditch police station.

"A lot of vehicle crime is the result of criminals seeing opportunities and taking them.

"Avoid being a victim by using a garage if you have one or choosing a well-lit open place to park and consider using a steering lock, particularly on an older model which may not be fitted with an immobiliser."

Anyone with information regarding the incidents can call Redditch police on 08457 444 888.
