A HAMSTER, which was rescued by a kindhearted police officer, has been reunited with his owner - thanks to the Advertiser/Messenger.

PC Simon Wills, of Bromsgrove police, saved the black, white and brown hamster, which he named Little Willy, earlier this month, but the animal's owners couldn't be traced.

Now, thanks to a photo of the hamster on the front page of last week's paper, his owner has come forward.

The owner, who does not want to be named but comes from the Fordhouse Road area, contacted the police last Thursday after seeing a picture of the hamster, whose real name is Hammy.

PC Wills said: "He had apparently been put outside in his hamster ball while the owner cleaned out his cage and somehow managed to escape.

"It was a cold night and she did not think he would survive so she was delighted to have him back."

He added: "I will miss him, but I am glad he is back with his rightful owner."

The hamster was rescued from the clutches of a cat in Fordhouse Road.

PC Wills saw the incident and pulled over to see the hamster hiding behind the wheel of a car. The police officer picked him up and took him back to the station. The hamster was given a makeshift bed in a box and a snack.

Since then PC Wills has been caring for the hamster, which he offered to rehome if the owner was not found.
