PERSHORE is all set to be transformed into a coastal resort as the town prepares to celebrate its popular annual carnival.
The theme for the event on bank holiday Monday is Pershore-on-Sea, which organisers hope will see mermaids and mariners enjoying a packed day 'beside the seaside'.
Dave Shaw, the chairman of the organising committee, said: "The theme, you could say, is as broad as the ocean, so it should give people plenty of scope to use their imaginations."
The procession will leave the Brandy Cask's riverside gardens at 1pm and follow the usual route to Abbey Park via Church Street. Two marching bands will be accompanying the walkers, and cash prizes are being offered for the best group and individual costumes.
The park will have a packed programme of events lasting throughout the day. As well as the traditional dog show, there will be the usual mix of stalls, games and other attractions. Providing a central focus for the proceedings will be the Classic Hits Radio Roadshow, which will be broadcasting from its mobile stage.
An added attraction will be Pershore's first asparagus farmers market, which will be held on Broad Street throughout the day.
Mr Shaw added: "All we need now is to find our carnival princess." Girls who would like to be considered for the role should draw or paint a picture of themselves and take it to the town hall before May 10.
Volunteers are still needed to help the day run smoothly - for information, call Mr Shaw on 07740 899694.
