BLUE plaques commemorating places of historic interest are set to be introduced in Kidderminster.

Residents are being asked to share their opinions on where they think the two plaques should be placed.

Civic society member, Nigel Gilbert said: "We are hoping that some members of the public get in touch because it would be interesting to see where they think deserves to be commemorated. We will listen to all suggestions."

The group has obtained funding for the "ongoing" project from the Kidderminster Educational Foundation.

The house of carpet manufacturer, John Broom, the former Cedars Hotel in Mason Road - now Kemp Hospice - is said to be "one of the favourites" to be recognised.

The only surviving workhouse building on the hospital site in Sutton Road is also being considered "to commemorate the suffering of the poor in the 19th century".

The society is asking for help with identifying the exact locations of the other possible sites.

Members hope to establish where the home of weaver, poet and founding member of the carpet weavers union, Noah Cooke - 9 Franche Road - once stood.

The 1911 location of 24 Chester Road, home of film director, Robert Hamer and his father, Gerald, needs to be found, along with the Summer Place dwelling of Rev Humphrey Price, who addressed weavers during the great strike of 1828.

Other suggestions include Woodfield House, to record the rescue of the MP Robert Lowe and the Mill Street premises of dance teacher and concert promoter, Frank Freeman.

Anyone who can help with the addresses can call Nigel Gilbert on 01562 829398.
