THE letter from Mr Nicholls (Shuttle/Times & News, April 21) about the Avro Anson aircraft that crash-landed in a field at the top of Manor Avenue, Kidderminster, in 1943, brought back memories of that event of over 60 years ago.

In those days the large field stretched from the top of Manor Avenue right through to Habberley Lane, and because it was high up it was plainly visible from the air, and several aircraft in trouble landed in it.

The Avro Anson referred to was a large twin-engined aircraft and the pilot, no doubt hoping to utilise the whole field, made his approach low over the hedge.

Unfortunately, the hedge was 12-15ft tall and the aircraft's tail caught it and was badly damaged, as Mr Nicholls says. If I remember rightly the registration of the aircraft was DG 799.

There was a sequel to this event.

Several years later as a member of 156 (Kidderminster) squadron Air Training Corps, I paid a visit to RAF Halfpenny Green for a flight. Having time to kill I had a look around the aircraft hangars and in one was DG 799, still in pieces.

Happy days.
