HUNDREDS of people are expected to descend upon the village of Rock on Sunday for the fifth instalment of an annual fund-raising event started to raise funds for the building of a new village hall.
Although the figure of around £400,000 that was needed to build the hall has now been secured, following a successful bid for almost £300,000 of lottery cash, the Pound The Bound event looks set to continue - and between 350,000 and 400,000 people are expected to take part this year.
Henk Buzink, who is one of an eight-strong team of organisers, said 245 people took part in last year's walk, compared to just 60 in the first event.
He added a total of around £8,000 had been raised over the last four years and any cash generated at this year's event, on Sunday would go towards maintaining the new hall when it was built and looking after the seven acre Millennium Green surrounding it.
"It's caught on very nicely and it's growing every year so I like to think that it will always be there now - if not for the fund-raising then because it's a very nice community event which a lot of people take part in."
He added walkers, who have the option of completing distances of 24 miles, 18 miles, 12 miles and six miles, would start at the Rock Cross Inn, which is open all day.
A three-mile treasure trail is also available for youngsters.
Mr Buzink added the six-mile route, which can be made with a guide or independently, had proved the most popular so far, with more than 80 people treading it last year.
He explained the event generated cash by charging adults £4 and children £2 to take part.
Registration and sponsorship forms can be obtained by visiting www.rockvillagehall.co.uk and participants can decide whether they raise cash for the village hall or a different charity, he said. Participants can also register on the day.
The registration desk is manned from 8am and the guided walk starts at 11am.
