On Sunday week, May 8 there will be a special service in St James's Church at 10.30am to mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day, which ended six years of fighting in Europe during the Second World War.

The service will celebrate the 60 years of peace which we have all enjoyed since and will remember those who lost their lives in the conflict. It will be conducted by the Rev Canon Julian Charley and the singing will be led by local choral group, Colla Voce.

The cricket season has started - even if the weather doesn't seem to have noticed! - and West Malvern Cricket Club is celebrating its 20th anniversary season. The new, more spacious changing rooms at the pavilion at the club's Mathon Park ground are now in use, although the plumbing and electrics have still to be completed.

The team won its first game on Sunday, in the rain, beating Tibberton Taverners by 9 wickets.

The annual WMCC dinner at New Road on April 9, attended by around 64 people, was enjoyed by all. There will be a regular practice night at the ground on Wednesdays from 6.30pm in the nets - which were re-netted at the end of last season.

New members are always made welcome, just come along and join in. The club is planning a number of summer fundraising events. They include a summer quiz in Mathon Village Hall on Friday, May 27 with a fish and chip supper, a jazz evening at Mathon Court on Saturday, June 25 and a special 20th anniversary match on Saturday, July 23, to be followed by a ceilidh in Mathon Village Hall, with music by Celtic Connection. The energetic club committee also has further events planned.

The next car boot sale at the Playing Fields is on Monday, May 2 from 10am-2pm with tombola, barbecue and refreshments. Booters can set up from 9am, details from Richard Hammond on 893951.
