EMBROIDERY inspired by fairy tales, including a life-sized mermaid's tail and remnants of the wicked witch's dancing shoes, has won a top national award for a Malvern student.

Debbie Folley has been studying City and Guilds machine embroidery part-time at Malvern Hills College for the past year. She was given a highly commended award by City and Guilds for her coursework portfolio, being congratulated for her innovative use of materials and techniques.

Debbie was previously a ceramics specialist, but now works entirely in machine embroidery, usually to commission. In May she will be moving to a new studio called Kate Modern, with two friends in Stoke Prior.

Machine embroidery classes are on offer as part of the college's summer school programme, with City and Guild classes starting up again in September.
