READERS of your paper might be beginning to wonder if there is anything more newsworthy than Sling Lane playing fields in the run-up to an election, but while I'm on the subject.
Newtown FC proposed seven pitches, car parking, hard standing, ATP, buildings, floodlights (it's all in their proposal). Anyone who knows the area of Sling Lane playing fields is incredulous at attempts to force a 'quart into a pint pot'.
The noise, disruption and ongoing development would be extensive. Just where are all the vehicles, traffic and what could easily amount to a few hundred people going to go when matches are played? All on these tiny little fields. It's laughable! Access is virtually non-existent; it's surrounded by family housing in quiet residential roads and all in the heart of Malvern.
We all know and accept that clubs like Newtown FC do a great job and well done to them. MHDC has clearly misjudged local feeling and needs to address the club's ambitions in a far more suitable location (which I believe it is). I also understand MHDC is proposing a playing fields association to develop sport and recreation for all on Sling Lane playing fields - sounds like common sense to me.
People, I suggest, need to pause and reflect about what it might mean if playing fields/public land in Malvern is going to be leased off for 25 years to private interest groups without consultation with those directly affected.
MHDC has consulted and made the right decision, I hope it sticks with it.
