Bromyard and District Garden Club has been saved from closure.

The club warned that it was in danger of folding after its committee began to dwindle and no-one was willing to help run events.

At an emergency meeting last Wednesday (April 20), two existing members agreed to join the committee.

David Rex will replace current chairman Gill Robinson, who is retiring at the end of the season, and Ray Millership will be trained as secretary to replace Judith Evans.

Group secretary Gill Churchill, who was also due to step down, said she would carry on for as long as possible.

Mrs Robinson said: "The club is going to go on, we now have two new committee members. People who'd not been so involved came out of the woodwork to volunteer.

"You've got to have people to run things, so hopefully we'll do well from this."

Mrs Robinson said around 30 people attended the meeting at Bromyard Centre.

Secretary Gill Churchill said: "I'm pleased because the club is more than 60 years old and people kept saying it must go on. There's support out there for it and having new people means new ideas."

The committee now has the task of improving the flagging membership, which has fallen from 120 to 50 in the past four years.

"We're planning to change the date of our autumn show in September, so it doesn't conflict with the Alfrick and Lulsley show," said Mrs Churchill.

"We're also looking for sponsorship for each of the classes."

She said children at St Peter's Primary School would be involved in this year's show.

"I'm taking round pumpkin and sunflower seeds and they can compete to grow the biggest ones."
