WITH the summer tees now in position and the course lengthened to its true summer yardage, The Worcestershire members have been anxious to test their golfing skills against the full course.
In the Mid-week Stableford competition, no players in division two returned a score equal to the par of the course. The winner, with a score of 34 points, was Scott Mullington. Both Richard Kay and Lee Jenkins returned with a score of 33 points and could only be separated on the usual count-back system. As a result, Lee was second and Richard was third.
Scores were only a little better in division one. The winner, with the best score of the day, 40 points, was Dan Long. Chris Griffiths was second with 37 and former club captain, Mel Stocker came third with a par round of 36 points.
In the RNLI Stableford competition, with only three golf clubs allowed, Barry Williams headed division three. Barry scored 35 points, one better than Richard Spilsbury who came second. Graham Sinclair was third with 33 points. Scores in division two were better, with the first three players all returning scores better than par. Derry Hanratty was third, John Daly second with Chris Massey the winner.
The best score of the day, 40 points, was returned by David Jones to win division one. Jamie Dunster was second with 38 points, with Andrew Bird in third place. As a result of this competition £423 was raised for the RNLI.
In the ladies' 18-hole Stableford competition, schoolteacher Mary Horobin showed her early season form to win with 35 points. Lady vice-captain Veronica Shaw was second, with former lady captain Janet Clowrey in third place.
In the ladies' Australian Spoon competition, played in pairs, Joan Howarth and Hazel Cartledge edged out Jan Strain and Pat Rose to take first place.
In the April medal, some 50 ladies competed in the three divisions. Fran Jackson-Dooley easily won division three by nine clear points. In second place was April Wilding with Alex Dunster third. Sally Agnew won division two by seven clear points with Ann Wilson second and Jayne Ackroyd third. Former lady captain, Kate Foster won division one by just one point from the present lady captain, Ruth Scott, who came second. Linda Marsh was third.
The first inter-club mixed match of the season, a home fixture against Droitwich, resulted in a resounding win for the home team by 8 to 3 .
Three pairs from The Worcestershire, Robin Darch with Norma Pottinger, Ian and Pauline Belsham and Phil and Val Burton, all won their games by the resounding score of four clear holes.
The Worcestershire ladies won their home game against Ross on Wye by three matches to one.
In the ladies' captain versus lady vice captain's teams, competition was extremely tense and the result was an amicable draw. £142 was raised on the day, at a successful bring and buy coffee morning following the competition which was donated to the lady captain's charity.
The junior members have had a flurry of competitions in the early season. In atrocious weather conditions, which would have seen their elders return to the clubhouse, the juniors battled through to complete their competition.
In the five-hole competition, for pupils of primary schools, Sam Watts came third, Jordan Hick second with Bill Thomas the winner. The seven-hole competition, for novices, was won by Dominic Bannister with Richard Biggs second
In the 18-hole competition, Stephen Coffey was third, Charlie Griffith second and James Kear the winner.
The senior section ran out convincing winners in their recent inter club fixtures. The Worcestershire Seniors beat Evesham away by 5 games to 1 , trounced Tewksbury at home 7 games to 1 and narrowly defeated Droitwich at home by 4 games to 3 .
