CHRIS Hewitt is the new men's singles champion after the Worcester League finals night at Christopher Whitehead School.

Hewitt defeated Dave White, runner-up for another year, 11-5, 7-11, 12-10, 11-4 to take the title.

He easily won the first set but White found his sharpness to come back and equalise.

Although the third set was close with great attacking, blocking and retrieving, Hewitt eventually triumphed and White then appeared to have run out of steam. In the semis, Hewitt won 11-6, 12-10, 9-11, 11-6 against young Mike Harvey who impressed with fast attacking shots but his opponents' experience and accuracy prospered.

White, meanwhile, looked unbeatable in a 11-9, 12-10, 11-8 victory over Mark Fiddian.

In the veterans' singles, Dave De Souza beat John Stalker in three close games with his offensive style clinching vital points in a 14-12, 11-9, 11-9 triumph.

In the ladies' singles final, Janet Hunt's steady and accurate play won the day against Beryl Shammon 11-7, 11-8, 11-4.

The men's doubles was won by White and Wayne Chapping who beat Fiddian and Hewitt 12-10, 11-5, 12-14, 11-5 in an excellent game.

For the first time, finals night involved two junior finals - the boys' under 12s and under 17s singles.

Leon Campbell beat David Hull-Blanshard 11-9, 11-5, 11-4 to win the under 12s.

Jamie Mills beat Robert Hodges 11-8, 11-2, 11-4 to take the under 17s title.

The youngsters all played well and are a credit to their coach, Lewis Siket.

The President's Junior Award was given to Amber Perry.

Trophies were presented by Bobby Goode, a former city and county player who travelled from Bath for the occasion.
