LIBERAL Democrats in the Malvern Hills are set to announce tonight whether their defeated parliamentary candidate for West Worcestershire will still head the district.

Councillor Tom Wells has been leader of Malvern Hills District Council since the Liberal Democrats took over the local authority in May 2003.

He temporarily stood down from the post to focus on the party's General Election campaign but was defeated by the long-standing Conservative MP Sir Michael Spicer for the West Worcestershire seat in a closely-fought battle on Thursday.

Now councillors are set to appoint the leader of the councilthis evening.

The council's deputy leader will also be announced. Councillor Jon Rayner has been in the position since May 2003.

Councillors will also make appointments to its committees and panels plus representatives on outside bodies.

This evening's meeting follows a full meeting of the council at 7pm ae to be held at Priory Lodge Hall, Malvern's Avenue Road.
