THE flag of the European Union flew over the Guildhall in Worcester yesterday to honour co-operation across all 25 member states.

Government buildings around the continent flew the flag, marking the 55th anniversary of when plans for a coalition between countries was first mooted.

City councillor David Candler, honorary secretary of the cross-party Local Government Group for Europe, said he was very pleased with the move.

"Much of the work of the EU involves the active participation of local and regional authorities in the UK and the rest of Europe - and this, of course, includes Worcester," he said.

"Working together, local authorities and the European Union have delivered improvements to people's lives."
