WHAT is the safest speed limit through roadworks on a motorway? I suggest it should be the same as the speed limiter settings on HGVs (58mph I think). Lorry drivers don't slow down to 50mph or 40mph because, as regular drivers on a route, they know where the speed cameras are. Put a law-abiding car driver in their way and it leads to the worst kind of HGV tailgating and overtaking. Hardly a safe option.
Unfortunately, that won't satisfy the local council bureaucrats. They don't seem to be so concerned about safety. They would prefer to dissuade you from driving your car. Hence their 10mph speed limits through some roadworks on trunk roads.
