A GRADE II listed pub in the centre of Worcester is proving so popular that a new bar has been installed upstairs to cater for its success.

The £122,000 investment from pub company Enterprise Inns has enabled The Royal Exchange in the Corn Market to extend upwards.

Upstairs, Bar 13 - a former storeroom and gents' toilets - blends in with the traditional styling of the old building, with ceiling cornicing and leather Chesterfield sofas.

Between Sunday and Wednesday, it can be booked for private functions such as birthday parties, weddings and business events.

According to licensee Ray Brierley, the bar has proven to be a good business decision. Now coupled with a new 1am late licence, it is attracting a whole new clientele aged 25 and upwards.

"The Exchange, with its traditional city centre pub atmosphere, high volume of regular drinkers and live sports viewing, attracted so many customers that we needed more space," said Ray, who has run the pub for seven years.

"Bar 13's easy, upmarket atmosphere has complemented downstairs by attracting a trendier set on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. However, as a whole, the venue still attracts and welcomes clientele who are aged from 18 to 80.

"We're really pleased with the results and with the response we have had from our customers. We want to make this the key destination for our local community."

, day and night, for young and old."
