GAS masks and identity cards were some of the memorabilia being examined by pupils from Kidderminster's Holy Trinity School.

The artefacts were part of a 1940s Home Front workshop experience launched by Severn Valley Railway and the National Trust.

"It was a great opportunity for the children to sample a slice of life as it would have been for many children back in the 1940s as they prepared to be evacuated," said teacher Jo Ferris.

"Children of their age and older would have been evacuated alone and expected to care for themselves as they began their journey to safety."

The 22 Holy Trinity children were heading no further than the National Trust's Dudmaston Hall, where they began their dig for victory in the allotments.

The youngsters were invited to sample a range of 1940s recipes and then took part in traditional games, before returning to the 21st Century at the end of the day.

"This type of educational trip is immensely important to the school's curriculum as it brings history to life," said Mrs Ferris.

"The children enjoyed playing games, but it was a definite mixed reaction to the food. A fantastic experience for everyone."
