Droitwich Spa 2

Archdale 1

Worcester Nursing Cup final

A WONDER goal from Ian Cottrill ensured Droitwich won the first silverware in its history on May 4.

Cottrill's stinging volley in the 83rd minute sealed a spirited comeback by Droitwich over the Midland Combination Division Two champions at Worcester City.

Droitwich had been trailing to a first half goal but red-hot striker Andy Keenahan brought Spa level, before Cottrill scored.

Manager Kevin Blaber was delighted his side had collected some silverware after Bewdley had beaten them in the Worcestershire Junior Cup.

He said: "We won the game with two of the best goals I have ever seen.

"Ian's was definitely of the highest quality and it was a great way to win such a big game for us."

Droitwich went into the game desperate for victory after being knocked out of the Challenge Vase at the semi-final stage and losing in the Worcestershire Junior Cup.

Spa fell a goal down after Darren Taft pounced during a goalmouth scramble caused by an Archdale free kick.

Goalkeeper Nick West punched the set piece, but the ball was sent back into Taft, who made no mistake.

Gregg Cooper's pass set Keenahan free and he coolly scored.

With the match ebbing away Keenahan got free down the right and sent in a cross.

Cottrill flicked the cross onto his knee, cushioned the ball and crashed a powerful shot in off the underside of the bar.

Blaber, who leaves Droitwich at the end of the season, was delighted to grab some glory.

He said: "It's a nice way to end my time at the club.

"The players have shown great character to come back from a goal down."
