THOUSANDS of visitors and residents flocked to the town centre over the weekend for the amazing celebrations of the 60th anniversary of VE day.

Organiser Graham Gopsill said: "The weekend was above all expectations. The streets were absolutely packed with people enjoying themselves."

The Heritage Centre in Victoria Square had 1,000 visitors on the Sunday to see their exhibition of all things 40s and it was estimated the number of visitors may have been 2,500 on Saturday. National Lottery money had made the weekend possible and, despite one of the flyovers being cancelled due to the weather, it was widely considered to be a great success.

Two wartime weddings took place over the weekend, which proved very popular, along with performances from a big band and 40s-style singers.

Graham added: "The Royal British Legion parade was very good as well. All in all it was a great weekend."
