THE West Midlands Co-op has defied the recent retail slump to register half-yearly profits of more than £3m.
The society announced interim profits of £3.04m for the six months to Saturday, March 26 a 33 per cent increase on the same period last year.
Turnover also rose during the same period, rising by 8.2 per cent to £93m.
Ben Reid, chief executive of West Midlands Co-operative Society, said: "These results are particularly pleasing, especially considering the challenging trading conditions faced by all of our divisions.
"These exceptional profit levels are a result of a concerted effort from management and staff at all levels throughout West Midlands Co-op.
"The business has made great advances during the past few years and we are continuing to see an upwards trend in our financial results."
West Midlands Co-op operates across Worcestershire and employs 2,300 staff in its five trading divisions and administrative offices.
