A NEW biography of composer Sir Edward Elgar has just been published.

The author is Michael Messenger, former county librarian, a director of the Elgar Foundation and chairman of the Elgar Birthplace management committee.

"It was Shire Publications who approached me about writing it," said Mr Messenger. "There are a number of well-known Elgar biographies already, such as those by Jerrold Northrop Moore and Michael Kennedy, and they are fairly detailed and comprehensive.

"Shire felt there was room for a shorter work, aimed more at the interested lay reader."

Edward Elgar takes the reader through the life of the composer, who will always be associated with the Malvern Hills. It is fully illustrated with old and new photographs and reproductions of portraits, manuscripts and other items.

"It looks very good," said Mr Messenger. "The people at Shire were very easy to work with. It's not for me to comment on the quality of the writing or the accuracy of the information, but people who've read it have said I've managed to cram quite a lot in."

Edward Elgar is available from local bookshops priced £5.99.
