ANDREW Moore (Power Bar RT) won the Worcester St. John's Cycling Club Spring Road Race.

Constant attacks by Moore and others throughout the 60-mile event came to nothing as the ever alert 80-man bunch quickly neutralised riders seeking to make a break.

The third of five laps saw the only respectable break of the race establish itself as ten riders, including favourites such as Moore, Paul Wilkes (Team Brad-gate), Charles Zanettacci (Leisure Lakes) and locals Ian Fagan (Tam Power Bar) and Gavin Poupart (Worcester St. Johns).

The break gained a slim advantage but were never more than 20 seconds ahead and the leaders were caught after 15 miles.

With a few miles to go, Moore, Wilkes and Worcester's Steve Dring (Stilton RT) gained a small lead, desperately fighting on as the final ascent of Severn Stoke Bank approached.

The bunch just made contact over the top, swallowing up Dring. Moore just stayed clear for the 200 metres over the summit to the finish line.

Wilkes was just a bike length behind and leader of the pack Matt Blythe (Newport CC) took third place right on Wilkes' wheel.

Top Ten: 1 Andrew Moore (Power Bar RT); 2 Paul Wilkes (Team Bradgate); 3 Matt Blythe (Newport CC); 4 Phil Mason (Climb On Bikes); 5 Simon Holt (Merlin Development Squad); 6 Adam Thomson (Swindon RC); 7 Ian Packer (Team Maestro); 8 Richard Cartland (Red Kite Cycles); 9 Simon Smith (Comedy Super Team); 10 Neil Jones (CC Abergavenny).

In the latest round of the Worcester St. Johns Cycling Club evening time trial series, riders battled for the Heron Shield.

Jon Newey took the trophy for the second year running.

Victory goes to the fastest rider on the 19.5 mile course.

Riders competing for the championship shield must use restricted gears, forcing them to pedal quickly rather than forcing larger gears to go faster.

Newey's time of 52 minutes 55 seconds was two minutes 26 seconds faster than second-placed Mick Potter.

In third was Steve Price with 55.31 with veteran Dave Walker a further 42 seconds back.

Of those choosing to ride with unrestricted gears, Gavin Popart was once again the fastest, posting 45.32 to easily beat Simon Wilson with 49.24.

Other times: Restricted gears -- Mike Amery 56.16; Chris Smallman 57.23; John Finch 58.12; Malcolm Bullock 1.04.55 Unrestricted Gears -- Justin Barnett 51.14; Simon Barringer 52.18; Vince Page 53.06; Jim Sharrock 54.3; Niel Ashton 55.37; Harry Treadwell 57.59; Ros Hope one hour 47 seconds.
