THERE was a big entry for the Worcestershire Golf Club's spring meeting medal competition and the majority of scoring was good.

In division one, the first six players scored par or better. The top four players all returned a one under par score of 70 and could only be separated by the committee. The winner was Paul Ford, second was Dave Jones, third Mike Sterry and fourth was Rob Coe.

In division two, the top two carded two under par 69s. The winner was local general practitioner David Radley, Alan Taylor was second and Graham Hill third.

Ed Hill, in division three, had the best round of the day, with a five under par 66. Ed won the division by five clear strokes from Bob Marriott, with Davis Agnew third. As a result, Paul Ford won the Easter Challenge Prize, David Radley the Spencer Cup and Ed Hill the Horton Cup.

In division one of the Sunday cup competition, Phil Shurmer continued with his recent return of form to win the division and return a score of 68, three strokes below par. Colin Lane came second with 69 and Colin Jones third with 70.

Division two was won by Kevin Field with Roy Phillips in second place and Mike Tubb third.

Club director Dave Thomas won division three with a score of 69. Tony Pullen was second and John Green third.

More than 40 ladies competed in the May medal and Carrington Cup. Jenny Simms returned the best round of the day to win division one and the cup with a two under par 69. Chris Urry came second with Liz Evans third.

Division two : 1 Sandra Schofield, 2 Joan Haworth, 3 Helen Thomas. Division three: 1 Margaret Duncan, 2 April Wilding, 3 Pat Fletcher.

In the ladies' Coronation Foursomes competition, two pairs returned Stableford scores of 35 points. The winners, with a better back nine, were Linda Mackie and Jennie Sims, who now represent the club in the regional finals.

The runners up were Faya Recordon-Durkz and Fran Jackson Dooley. In the Porch Cup former lady captain, June Jones, won with the present lady captain Ruth Scott in second place.

Friendly, yet competitive rivalry, was to the fore when the senior gentlemen held their first match against the ladies. Played in good weather with the course in excellent condition, the ladies were in fine form and ran out 6-4 winners.

There were notable wins for lady captain Ruth Scott paired with club director Ann Goode; Jane Tromans and Jane Quick; Veronica Shaw and Linda Mackie; Lyn Marsh and Jackie Turner; Jill Piner and Janet Cheshire and Judy Vincent and Barbara Wilkinson.

The seniors held their heads in shame as they entertained the ladies to a meal after the match.

The B team, captained by Chris Hardy, had a 3-3 draw with Kidderminster. There were excellent wins for Tim Wilson/Alan Davies and Mike Day/Mike Bothma, but the outstanding win was by Francis Bird and Barry Caswell, who won five and three.
