FORTY laptop computers valued at more than £25,000 have been stolen from University College Worcester.
A police spokesman said the Dell computers were still in the original packaging, which could make them an attractive proposition for people looking to buy one. It is believed that the computers are not marked as belonging to the college.
"The public, therefore, need to be even more vigilant to ensure that they are not tempted to buy one, and therefore handle, stolen property," he said.
He urged educational and other organisations to ensure that all computers are clearly identified through etching, engraving or some other recognised method that cannot be tampered with.
"A number of educational establishments have already taken advantage of our engraving kits and we would encourage every school and college to do the same.
"While etching and engraving does not necessarily prevent theft, if computers are not identified in this way, or if records are not kept of their serial numbers, then it is virtually impossible to return them to the rightful owners."
The computers were stolen between Friday, April 22, and Wednesday, May 11.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Worcester police on 08457 444888.
