THE Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb marked its centenary year with two days of action at the weekend.

Hereford racer Deryk Young recorded the top times on both in his Gould GR51.

Saturday saw 130 competitors start, with special classes for Vintage Frazer Nash cars, Porsches and Austin Healeys, mixed in with the usual assortment of modified road, sports and single-seat racing cars.

An early victim of Shelsley's unforgiving banks was Nick Gresty from Barnton whose Ford Fiesta rolled over at Kennel bend, although he recovered to take his later runs.

The best time of the day, 27.26 seconds, was set by Hereford driver Young in his newly-acquired Gould GR51, with four-litre F1 power.

Runner-up was John Jones from Kington in his supercharged Pilbeam MP82 in a time of 28.24 secs.

Sunday's event saw 131 competitors starting out.

Rolling

Graham Millar provided early drama in his modified Ford Escort by rolling over at the top bend and coming to rest back on his wheels.

Special classes also catered for contingents of Triumph, Ginetta and Westfield drivers.

The best time of the day was again recorded by Young, this time in 26.76 secs in his Gould GR51.

Runner-up this time was Phil Jeffries from Stafford in his Hi Tech Dp1600 in 28.40 secs.
