TOTLAND Bay, owned by Worcester doctor Richard Newland and ridden by Tom Weston, came up trumps at the Golden Valley Hunt point-to-point.

But the odds-on favourite had a titanic struggle with valiant runner-up Go Go Gallant to take the Welsh Border Area Championship Confined race in Bredwardine.

Weston was content to bide his time in the five-runner field but, over the final three fences, veteran 16-year-old Go Go Gallant, ridden by Helen Grundy, was not going to give in without a struggle.

It was only half-way up the run-in that Totland Bay asserted to take the honours by a length-and-a-half.

And owner Newland said: "I'm thrilled. He was unlucky at Chaddesley last time out when he got brought down but that was a bit of a struggle as I think Tom thought the other one would give in earlier. He could revert to chasing in the summer months."

Jockey David Mansell completed a double as he struck with Lucky Wyn in the Restricted Open and then with another determined win aboard Arrows Gold in the first division of the young horse Maiden race.

Trained at Leominster by Mark Doyle for owner Pat Mullen, Arrows Gold was under pressure three fences from home.

But, responding well to Mansell's driving, he stayed on determinedly to score by 15 lengths from Ben More.

The second division of the young horse Maiden fell to Spicey Case, owned by Nigel Lilley, a familiar figure on the local circuit, and ex-jockey Bruce Dowling.

She belied her long odds to win by a length-and-a-half under a stylish ride from Nick Oliver.

Lilley confessed: "I'm shocked. Six weeks ago, she was going to be turned away but, under trainer Caroline Walker's tender hand, she has transformed and it is nine years ago since her dam National Case won for us at Upton."

Dowling added: "It just goes to show -- warmer weather in the Spring and she has come to herself but we didn't have a penny on her."

The win and an earlier third place at the meeting took Oliver into a joint share of the Mark Richards trophy award for wins at selected meetings with welsh rider James Tudor.

And Oliver clinched outright the Welsh Border Area leading rider award.
