A CONGREGATION of more than 1,000 packed into Hereford Cathedral for a memorial service for Col Sir Piers Bengough, a former High Sheriff of Worcestershire and Herefordshire.
Among them were several representatives of members of the Royal Family, led by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, who represented The Queen.
Sir Piers, who died at his home at Canon Pyon, near Hereford in April, made his mark in many fields and the service was one of the biggest events of its kind the cathedral has ever seen.
A military man, he commanded the Royal Hussars, rode in the Grand National four times, was the Queen's Representative at Ascot for 15 years, organised many royal events and was a tireless fund raiser for numerous causes, including Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust.
The service address was given by his long time friend Major General Arthur Denaro and many of his friends from the racing world were in attendance.
Sir Piers' funeral service had been private.
