JOSH Cooprider has called time on his playing career to become head coach of Worcester Wolves.

Cooprider, captain last season, will retire from on-court activities to begin his new role.

The 25-year-old, who led University College Worcester to British Championship success earlier this year, replaces Jimmy Smith.

Cooprider will work closely with coaches of all teams based at University College Worcester as the Wolves and UCW set-up is restructured.

A new system will be introduced across Wolves' first and second teams as well as the two UCW sides, so players can move between them with ease. Cooprider will also work with players on a daily basis, something not possible under Smith due to his work commitments.

Ty Shaw is set to take over from Cooprider as player-coach of the University first string when he returns from Australia, while Cecil Gordon continues as Wolves' second team coach.

The whole equation adds up to exciting times ahead. Director of basketball Mick Donovan said: "We think Josh's an exciting coach and he's built up a great rapport with the players.

"The opportunity to have someone working with the players on a daily basis was something we couldn't refuse. We now have the chance to have a more structured approach."

Cooprider added: "I will draw on my experience but, at the same time, I understand it's going to be full of new challenges."
