A SPA councillor, whose political career spans nearly 30 years, was chosen as the next Wychavon District Council chairman last week.

Pam Davey, who was recently ousted from her Droitwich South county council seat, was presented with her chain from outgoing chairman Cllr David Noyes (Con-Broadway and Wickhamford).

Cllr Davey (Con-Droitwich East) was first elected to the district council in 1999, but she had her first taste of politics in 1976 when she was elected to the district council in her home town of Kingswood, near Bristol.

Cllr Davey moved to Droitwich Spa in 1986 and has been a member of the town's Canal Trust since 1989.

She also served on the town council.

Cllr Davey said: "During my time as chairman I shall endeavour to generate more involvement with the rural parishes as they represent more than half of the population of Wychavon.

"I shall continue the traditional support of the three towns."

She added that she would not choose a specific charity for the year but instead have a different one for each event.

Cllr Davey said: "The first event will be the chairman's dinner dance at the Raven Hotel on October 29.

"All proceeds from that event will go to St Richard's Hospice.

"I want to encourage the charities concerned and members of the council to take an active role in the organisation, which they have already indicated they are happy to do."

Cllr Jean Dowty (Con-Ombersley) was elected as vice-chairman at the meeting.
